With Earth Day just around the corner, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about what the day is all about and how you can take part or do your bit for our planet.

Earth Day was started on the 22 April 1970 in the US and has been an annual event every year since. The event in 1970 was the largest single day protest in human history with over 20 million people filling the streets!

Earth Day 2020 celebrated its 50th anniversary amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and the online event is being referred to as the largest online mobilisation in history.

Today, there are over 1 billion people in more than 190 countries who participate in Earth Day events around the world.

The annual Earth Day event shines a light on the serious environmental issues facing the world, such as;

  • Climate Action
  • Science and Education
  • People and Communities
  • Conservation and Restoration
  • Plastic and Pollution

The theme for Earth Day in 2021 is ‘Restore Our Earth’, which focusses on the need to reduce our impact on the planet and how we can repair the damage already done.

Here are some ideas for how you can get involved in Earth Day this year.

Below is a list of 10 small changes you can make right now to do your bit.

  • Plant something – a tree, a flower, anything!
  • Ride your bike or walk, instead of driving every day
  • Use reusable bags whenever possible
  • Use a keep cup for your morning coffee
  • Use a refillable water bottle
  • Pick up rubbish your local park or the beach
  • Ensure you understand how to recycle and are correctly recycling household items and use Only One Earth’s Recycling Station
  • Use a water-saving shower head and taps throughout your home
  • Create a compost pile for leftover food scraps
  • Reduce the amount of electricity you use in your home by hanging washing out, instead of using the dryer, making sure you’re washing machine/dishwasher is full before turning it on, turning lights off when they are not required and switch to energy saving lightbulbs.

There are so many other small changes you can make with the products in your home, which can be found right here at Only One Earth.
